Atom Laser: Depumping Atoms into Dark State
Cold atoms in the low field seeking state are susceptible to heating and removal from the guide by scattering stray resonant photons from nearby laser cooling sources. Our way out of this dilemma is to pump the atoms into a dark state that can still be magnetically guided. This principle has recently been demonstrated by our group.

TOF fluorescence data, taken 1 cm from MOT, demonstrate that cold atoms can be pumped into a dark state and extracted from the MOT, with much less stray light being scattered.
